Al momento è stato dipinto , il dipinto era considerato rivoluzionario e rivoluzionario , poiché presenta gli orrori della guerra che finora non erano stati apertamente illustrati . Il dipinto si concentra su un uomo , illuminato a luce bianca al centro del dipinto , braccia tese ai lati , di fronte a una squadra di tiro francese . I suoi compagni uccisi sporcano il terreno . È quindi considerato uno dei primi pezzi di arte moderna . Questo dipinto ha influenzato numerosi altri artisti , che hanno fatto direttamente riferimento allo stile e all'ambientazione del dipinto , tra cui edouard manet e pablo picasso .
